A PORTAL TOWARD THE MUSIC OF THE OUTSKIRTS

WORLD AND URBAN ARTS, GRIM, TERSE AND VIGOROUS

"I have memories of paradise and a pack of scars..."

As we change from love songs to those that fit our planet, Barbès and La Goutte d'Or may be a destination because:

  • The railroad and intersecting metro lines at Barbès allow an influx of visitors.
  • The exceptional renovation of the Château Rouge métro station, two centers of the Institute of Islamic Cultures and the remarkable 360 seem incomprehensible unless one sees the belittled neighborhood as pivot of the culture to come.

That cannot happen in a vacuum. Essential is the vitality of the residents themselves: "Looks", tailors and new and traditional shops have shown this already.

Please read on.

Announcements for slam, rap and music plaster shop windows and walls...

Announcements on rue Doudeauville,
 the same afternoon

A public of initiates...

"Pape Faye, son of Assane Mbaye, for your ceremonies"

Music and musicians that appear spontaneously...

"Tonight, live concert, entry 5 euros"

"Madame! He just bought his guitar!," a friend of the young man called down from a window. As for the man in red, he accompagnied his song with the rattle he holds in his right hand.

The group with whom this chapter began conclude their parade.

A performance in the suburbs that will last until 4 a.m.

On the city's northern frontier,
La Goutte d'Or is a gateway
to immigrants' immense periphery,
where most shows take place.

That is the most powerful reason
for thinking that this neighborhood
 may become a Destination.
