THE STREET VENDORS VANISH WHEN COPS ARRIVE

WHEN A LOOKOUT BLOWS A WHISTLE, THE PEDDLERS SEIZE THEIR WARES AND FLEE

     Béatrice Genaudeau

A center-right newspaper writes, "The multitude of street vendors who block rue Dejean leave quietly when police arrive, to return a few minutes later."

"Leaving quietly" hardly describes the frantic flight.

The article does not say that since the short street is pedestrian, there is no traffic to obstruct.

Or that shops and vendors are complimentary: The first sell food, the others handbags, make-up, costume jewelry and clothing, turning the street into a kind of mall.

The peddlers do not return "after a few minutes"
but after several hours,
a major loss for people who need the market to survive.
